I have a problem.
You see, I am addicted to social media. I check Facebook, Instagram, and Periscope many, many, many times throughout the day. I post a picture, comment or status update and I check back in over and over to see if anyone has commented. I can’t explain it. On a deeper level, I’m sure I’m searching for some sort of validation. Even if it’s temporary, I like knowing what I have done has impacted others in some capacity.
From the other side, I like being in-the-know. I enjoy seeing what others are doing, saying, experiencing, and posting. Unbeknownst to them, I live vicariously through many of my friends and family’s lives. It is time for me to live my own.
In the Fall of 2016, I felt this small, yet very powerful nudge to pull away from it all. I’ve felt it in the past to not be on social media for a bit, but nothing to this magnitude. This time, I sensed the Lord was asking me to give it all up. Not for a week or a month, but for an entire year. Yes, the entire year of 2017.
I shared this possible plan with Papa at the beginning of December 2016, but hadn’t fully committed to it yet. It wasn’t until December 29th that I made it officially official. I turned off all email notifications for all social media, especially Facebook and Instagram. No more knowledge of posts, messages, videos, comments or likes. On that day, I also let the Facebook world know of my plans. The cat was let out of the bag. No going back. I’m all in … er, or rather … I’m out.
Throughout this 2017 year, I will be sharing this journey with you. I’m sure there will be many joys and sorrows, struggles and victories, and lessons learned along the way. There’s a bit of fear rising in me of missing out and feeling alone or isolated. But, I’m hopeful the blessings gained will far outweigh any loss.
I suspect there to be significant changes to come from the journey. What those changes will be or look like exactly, I have no idea. What I do know, is I am excited. I am excited to be free.
Here is the first post in my journey and for this entire blog, dated January 2, 2017.
I encourage you to keep checking back here for updates or visit the “Social Media Free for 2017” category for all tagged posts.
Thank you for joining me as I explore this world of ours, without social media!
